In “The Twilight of Nation-States”, a kind of virus made up of logos of companies listed on the New York, Frankfurt, Paris, London, Tokyo and Hong Kong stock exchanges, eats up the flags of various countries of the world in its voracious progress. The flags, minimal graphics, symbols of nation-states, are devoured by the harmful emblems of the “dictatorship of the markets,” a regime subjugating countries and citizens alike through debt in an implacable exercise of neo-feudalism. Jean Ziegler, an unrelenting critic of the private trans-continental societies of industry, the banking system, services and trade—and also of those at their head, whom he likes to call predators, cosmocrats or new feudal lords of the Empire of Shame—claims that a new breed of feudal systems has emerged, “more powerful, more cynical, more brutal and more astute than the old ones.” And like their predecessors, the new feudal lords exert their control over their serfs through debt. Bailouts, cuts, privatisations, attacks by speculators, and social drama. The welfare state is being pummelled by the markets’ fists, while the market is being portrayed in all media supports as a hand that wishes to caress us.
